Grinnell College was eventually able to import our patron records in Ariel
4.1.1 from an Excel spreadsheet. Once I realized that almost everyone seemed
to use ILL, about 2000 people rather than just a few hundred, we went back to
work on it.

Our first problem was that we could not see the error log. Once we figured out
how to view the error log we were able to trouble shoot the importing of the
patron records. To view the log, go to Log -- Show Log. In the Log Viewer
menu bar, click on Filters -- Set. We needed to check the box in front of
Others. Then we could see the error messages.

The order of the columns in the spreadsheet needs to be:

Col. 1 FirstName
Col. 2 LastName
Col. 3 Email address
Col. 4 Category

We did not import any other data. Ariel assigned PIN#s and used the defaults
we had set as to email/ftp, pdf/tiff. We tried to use a slash in the Category
name and Ariel did not like that.

Hope this helps anyone who tries to do this in the future. Thank you to all
who responded with helpful suggestions.

Hello,

After some emails to Infotrieve support they came up with this method
for importing
patron records into Ariel 4.1.1 using an Excel file with surname, first
name, email, category,
option for sending documents (E_MAIL or FTP), option for sending
documents (PDF or TIFF), comment,
PIN.

I tried loading this into a 4.1.1 server from a 4.1.1 client and it
worked OK.
It didn't seem to set the email/ftp, PDF/TIFF or the PIN for each
patron.

The Ariel documentation seems to be correct for an Excel file, but the
column numbers need to be reworked.

Hello,

This is probably not much help, but about a year ago while convering
to an Ariel server I tried every which way I could think of to import
patron records (including an empty file) and Ariel would crash every
time.

John -

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this didn't work either. We
probably only have a few hundred patrons who use ILL so we are thinking
about keying them, unless someone else has any suggestions.
