John (Springer),

The Governance Committee of the Board has been looking at a variety of broader
issues recently.

As a committee we've been cautious to not let Governance issues monopolize our
limited bandwidth. Many similar organizations can consume themselves in
governance exercises and lose sight of their mission.

Term limits have been discussed at the Committee and Board level on a few
occasions and much like the discussion here, there is a large variety of
viewpoints but not a clear consensus.

Our current focus of activities is as follows:

* Ensuring there is an appropriate amount of accountability to ensure member
input is required prior to a key change in the organization such as the mission.
* Work to ensure conflict of interest provisions meet best practices for an
organization like ARIN
* Work on the Nomination Committee to improve the depth of candidates and also
ensure the membership has the information it seeks to make an informed decision
at voting time.

We are also looking at the broader issue of composition, structure and
selection of bodies such as the Board and the Advisory Council. The issue of
term limits would certainly continue to be considered here.

As committee chair I would find it valuable to continue to hear from the
community what problems you believe need solving in respect to composition,
structure and selection. I think if the community can assist in finding
consensus around these problems the committee can decide what are the right
actions to resolve those.

I continue to watch the mailing list thread with interest. Thanks to all who
have provided constructive input to the committee and of course welcome further
feedback either directly or to the mailing list.

Hope that helps...

Cheers,

Paul
Chair, ARIN BoT Governance Committee
