A friend of mine who recently graduated from an urban city has an
interesting take.  She completed a  rape agression defense class in which
they specifically suggested that women not carry change in the pockets.
Vagrants tend to have an ear for change jingling, making those women who
carry excess change targets.

I guess this would only apply to urban women, but perhaps your friend's
observation is constant with that variable.  (heh!)
