Alex captures my thoughts on the subject eloquently as
always. :-)
But yes, I do know a bit about the film, if you're
looking for the standard production details. It's been
in development for about a year, ever since, in late
1999, Sylvia Nasar was reportedly paid in the vicinity
of $1 million for the rights to bring her book to the
screen (a pretty impressive sum for the story of a
relatively unknown figure.) Principal photography will
be split between Princeton and New York City, and
shooting is supposed to start in March.
Based on early reviews of the script, the plot focuses
mainly on the period following Nash's publishing of
his bargaining equilibrium theories, when he was
involved in U.S. intelligence efforts to stall Soviet
development of a portable atomic bomb, during which
time he also first exhibited outward signs of mental
illness, and experienced the collapse of his marriage.
I'm certainly interested in the film, based on both
the subject matter, and the presence of Crowe, Ed
Harris, and of course, Jennifer Connelly.
Unfortunately, it has two major factors going against
it. One is the presence of Ron Howard as director.
Though he's occassionally pulled off an interesting
film or two, for the most part, he's been the epitome
of a lightweight studio hack, in my opinion. And the
other is that the script is penned by Akiva Goldsmith,
best known for writing dreck like Batman and Robin.
Neither of which bodes well for this film, but I'll
try to have an open mind.
On a tangential note, as someone who isn't as familiar
with game theory as most here (and whose math
background in math is likewise limited), I was curious
if any on the list might have any recommendations for
an introductory text on the subject. Should I begin
with one of von Neumann's works, or is there a better
place to start?
