In all fairness, upon reflection, I must say that although historians tend to 
talk about WASP elites, especially around the turn of the century, I seem to 
recall from growing up in Chicago that Jane Addams, the founder of the 
immigrant-Americanizing Hull House in Chicago, was (like me) Jewish.
