What about the wonderful Harold Robbins: The Carpetbaggers, 79
Park Avenue, A Stone for Danny Fisher, The Betsy, Tycoon, Stiletto,
Lonely Lady, Never Love a Stranger, The Inheritors . . . the sad
thing is I haven't read him in years. His books got sexier and sexier
until I no longer cared for them.
I think most women go through a period in their lives when they read
and love romances: Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rogers, The Wolf
and the Dove and The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwess,
Jude Devereaux and Johanna Lindsey. Funny but the first three
titles I mention above are all I remember.
Pat Conroy is in a league all his own with Beach Music, Prince of Tides,
and The Great Santini. I think Anne Rivers Siddons is close to being
in that league with Colony, Outer Banks, and Islands.
I can't believe I didn't mention the Sherlock Holmes series and Agatha
Christie's Miss Marple and the detective with the unpronounceable
name. I love the books and the movies of all these characters.
For horror I will never forget Stephen King's It, The Stand, Salem's
Lot, The Shining, and Insomnia; Dean Koontz's Strangers, Watchers,
Whispers, Phantoms, etc; Robert McCammon's Wolf's Hour, Swan
Song, Stinger, etc.; I also have to mention Brian Lumley's Necroscope
series for the sheer horror of them. I will never forget his monstrous
vampires and the vampire world he created. I've already said Ann
Rice has a wonderful command of the English language and her
first 4 or so vampire books were outstanding.
This is fun. Every time I hit the send button I think of more books
that made a huge impression on my life.
