Holy Chants on Lord Ganesha Artist: VARIOUS ARTISTES
(Kosmic/Ragaa's) Reviewer: HARDESH SINGH HOLY Chants on Lord Ganesha can best be described as meditative chanting meets A.R. Rahman. Every trick we have come to expect from A.R. Rahman is employed here... lush strings paired with traditional Indian instruments, laid on a foundation of Western-inspired grooves. I guess every young composer coming out of India today aspires to be the next A.R. Rahman and it is, after all, a formula that appeals to a wide audience. The album opens quite appropriately with Ganapathy stotram ? the traditional invocation of Lord Ganesha...followed by eight more songs on the same theme that manage to sustain meditative vibes throughout. What I especially like is how this album maintains its strong spiritual focus while trying to earn itself street cred. It appeals to both the modern-day yoga practitioner and the traditionalists. It's enough that Stephen Devassy is indeed a rather clever composer, and Kosmic Music has come up with an album strong on production values, with a modern take on traditional chants that is worth its weight in manna. Incidentally there is a similar release called Vishwatma, a collection of songs devoted to Lord Krishna featuring vocal contributions by Shankar Mahadevan. There is very little that separates these two albums, although Vishwatma veers more towards orchestral arrangement accompanied by chorus. They would both do a great job of providing devotional music to accompany the upcoming Deepavali celebrations. ------------------------ Yahoo!
