They are compared because they are trailblazers for their time.
They both changed the way Indian movie music is made and sounds.

They are both versatile and can provide music spanning genres, from
indian classical to completely western.

We don't want to start this here. I love both RDB and AR
Rahman...my 2 favorite composers ever, and I enjoy their music
without comparing the two. You should see my CD library. Granted,
RDB did copy, but Rahman has sampled from other songs, anyone
refuting this fact is in denial.....Rahman hasn't lifted a tune yet
though, and I don't think he ever will.

RD Burman won only 2 Filmfare awards and Laxmikant Pyarelal were
winning them year after year. Does that make them superior music
directors? Politics plays a large part in these awards, and merit
is not rewarded all the time. As for the singers, the talent pool
was far more limited back then. RD Burman is not the only one
guilty of using the same singers over and over again.

RD Burman has given tons of variety to his music and managed to
compose at a high level for three decades. I will give this
analysis, Rahman is certainly more gifted from an arrangment point
of view...but for melody, RD Burman is superior. Rahman can created
atmosphere with sound design in a way that could never be done
before. This is thanks to technology, but largely due to his
immense gifts.

No point in really comparing the two. Different eras, different
expectations from the audience and movie makers. RD Burman lost
plenty of work in the 80s due to his refusal to compromise on making
quality music. Unfortunately, things got pretty bad in the early
90s and he did compose some forgettable soundtracks like Indrajeet,
Sarphira and Bahurani. In closing, one can enjoy both music
directors. There's no point in bashing one to prop up the other
one. I think AR Rahman himself would be insulted by such a
comparison.
