Yesterday I watched RDB in one of the theatres in
Dubai at 10.30 in the morning, lousy time to watch a movie, I know but the only
time I could select if I had to watch it without my school going kids. I cannot
write about any audience reaction because there was just one other couple in the
theatre apart from me and my wife but I was not unduly worried because the sales
girl said that the evening shows are running to full house. I am not good at
either reviewing movies or music which a lot of others have done very
competently so I will not attempt it. Just my take. Though I have been
sufficiently warned by one of the group members who wrote here that all songs
come in the background, I really did not expect that literally for each and
every song. I was a bit disappointed that almost all the songs never came in
full, even in the background. The interludes of the title song, khalbali
and lukka Chuppi were juxtaposed with characters talking to each other
and the alaap was too faded in the background. But whatever came through
the speakers music and vocals, man, it rocked. And what rocked even more was the
back ground score. Even a casual fan who watches for time pass cannot miss the
powerful bgms. The director has imaginatively used the songs and for those who
had not bought the CDs (probably not the arr hardcore fan but still likes good
music) I think it will kinda tickle their curiosity of what the music is all
about. But I think for the time pass guys, the songs may hardly have any impact
at all as you cannot really get on the chairs and start dancing. Having said all
that, probably for the first time in our cinema you have had a director who has
jelled every song with the narrative. hats off to him as well as our boss who is
probably the only composer who can pull this off. Hope our audience is
intelligent enough to understand all these nuances and make it a
hit.
My wish is to see all the songs fully with proper
choreography, typical bollywood style. How nice it will be if this is done as a
bonus feature in the DVD. I know it is wishful thinking. It would also be
interesting to know if ARR is happy with the way the songs have been used in
this film. And thanks gops, for all the postings. tremendous effort and it helps
mould opinions as well.
thx
