Actually Rahman has been using this sound quite extensively. He has
been using it for a while, if you haven't noticed he tends to stick to
a certain vibe or sounds for a while, before he catches on to
something else. Like during Tehzeeb time... he was on phone
tones(sounds).

This old record or crackling sound has been evident in a past few
albums. I believe it's his signature sound which stays for a few
years, before he catches on to something else.

1. Sivaji - Style: during the beginning and the ending.

2. Guru - Ay Hairathe: around 3:05, right when Alka starts singing "Ay
hairathe"

3. Aa Aah - Thigu Thigu: beginning of the song.

4. Meenaxi - Chinamma Chilkamma: beginning of the song. (I believe
this was the start of Rahman's "newfound" trend of adding crackling sound)

Wasim.
