RARING TO GO Sam, Nadisha and Anish of Inside Out

They are an acoustic band but they play songs such as “Zombie” by the
Cranberries, “My Immortal” by Evanescence, “One of Us” by Joan Osbourne and
“Brother” by Alice in Chains… Inside Out, is a new -born, Chennai-based band
(started in February this year) of sound engineers, except for the lead singer,
Nadisha.

“We named the group Inside Out because we play heavy rock but mellow the
rhythm. We just change the instrumental bit in the songs. We tone down the lead
guitar, the drums and the bass guitar. But we stick to the same vocal style so
that listeners get the feel of the song,” says Rahul Samuel, who is better
known as Sam G, and plays the lead guitar and vocals.

Sam and Anish, the other lead guitarist, are from Delhi and used to play
without drums. The group gradually took shape when they found a lead singer.
“When we started we thought only the not-so-young crowd will like our music.
Since we play a lot of new songs as well, the youngsters too like it.

Sometimes we even sing songs from the 1960s and 1970s,” says Sam, who has
learnt western classical music.

Nadisha, the lead vocalist, is also trained in western classical music and
has a fine voice. She has worked with the likes of A.R. Rahman. She is at
present doing a course in Fine Arts at Stella Maris College in the city and has
sung for a couple of films.

Anish has cut an album with his other band Descant. Bass player Avinash loves
punk music while drummer Manu is trained in Carnatic music and plays the
mridangam.

Besides covers of bands such as Jewel, Alanis Morissette, Pearl Jam, Eagles,
Nelly Furtado and Pink Floyd, the band also plays its own pieces. Nadisha and
Anish pen the lyrics, and Sam composes the music. The group plans to do more
gigs and play their own songs.
