The master’s voice

Flautist Ronu Majumdar reminisces his days with George Harrison & mentor Zakir
Hussain.

He has played with the top most musicians in the world and now conjures his
experience of
playing with some of them in an album. Flautist Ronu Majumdar plays with some
of his closest
friends on ‘Journey- Ronu Majumdar & Friends’.

According to him till date it’s the most emotionally loaded work he has
composed. “I have
collaborated with Taufiq Qureshi (percussion) who is a long time friend, Pt
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt
(Mohan Veena), Bombay Jayashri (vocalist), Kadri Gopalnath (saxophone) and
more,” he says.

Ronu has also been a part of George Harrison’s musical projects and recalls
working with him in
his house. “George Harrison was a saint and donated a lot of money to the Hare
Krishna temple.
He was very unassuming and modest,” he reminisces.

The musician considers Zakir Hussain as his mentor. “I worked with him on ‘Mr &
Mrs Iyer’ and
absolutely I think is a great human being,” he says adding that in Bollywood
it’s always Vishal
Bhardwaj and AR Rahman he loves working with.

“We used to call AR Rahman, ‘Dilip’. He is a true genius and we could see that
even in the
earlier days. I worked with him on ‘Sadma’. It’s great that people like Vishal
and Rahman give
all the musicians credits which was not the case in the olden days,” he
explains.
