Yet another nice read! And this perhaps explains why the music for Golden Age
was listed as all tracks by Craig & ARR, whereas the individual tracks have the
real credits mentioned. I'm guessing it was Shekhar Kapur's way of
acknowledging what ARR composed but was left unused.
Too bad about the rejected score. It would have been interesting to hear how
the Indian/eastern sound would have worked in this context.
The studios place too much importance on what will be palatable (or
established) going by the formula rather than what each movie needs.

Rahman and the Oscars
I asked A R Rahman to score the music for Golden Age, and even then I was
allowed only to take him as a co composer. And I watched as the studio rejected
the most beautiful compositions from A R Rahman, because they did not get or
were not willing to embrace something from another culture. As it happened the
score of Golden Age was not half as good as it could have been.
