Abhijeet
TV as a reality show judge. Hyd Times catches up with the
singer<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Its-tough-to-work-with-Rahman-Abhijeet/articleshow/4234440.cms#>who
is remembered for hits like Chand Taare from Yes Boss and is known as
the voice of Shah Rukh Khan.

There are so many untrained and unconventional singers these days. Is it
tough to sustain the competition for senior singers like you?
Today everybody is a singer. He doesn’t have to be in sur. Many of the
modern day singers are besuras. Ask them to sing live on stage, without a CD
player and they can’t do it. And looking at them, I think my standards are
quite high and I feel proud. At one point of time there were singers like
Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Manageshkar and now there are hundreds of
singers who don’t have an identity. Every singer sounds the same and sings
the same. Now it’s the
music<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Its-tough-to-work-with-Rahman-Abhijeet/articleshow/4234440.cms#>equipment
that do most of the singing! Earlier, a song meant that it was a
concerted effort by not just the music director, lyricist and singer but by
the film’s producer, director and other technicians. But now, when I sing, I
don’t even know for whom I am
singing<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Its-tough-to-work-with-Rahman-Abhijeet/articleshow/4234440.cms#>as
in the recording studio most of the times I find only the music
director’s assistants. I don’t even know who's the co-singer and then I
don’t even realise when the song’s come and gone in the market. Life’s
moving very fast and certainly more so in the film
industry<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Its-tough-to-work-with-Rahman-Abhijeet/articleshow/4234440.cms#>!

There’s more things happening to singers’ career now and they have the
option for getting into reality shows ...
Yes, there are greater options now. TV is a bigger medium and reality
shows<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Its-tough-to-work-with-Rahman-Abhijeet/articleshow/4234440.cms#>promote
the new and genuinely talented. There's always employment in the
film industry, but I draw a line on what songs I have to sing.

Among the current music directors who's the toughest to work with?
AR Rehman. I haven’t sung many songs for him. But it’s really tough to work
with him. Rahman likes to work in the night. When you are in deep sleep,
suddenly his assistants come and knock the door and ask you to sing.

Now that Pak is in news again, your take on Pakistani singers ...
I have many friends and followers in Pakistan but I don’t have a high
opinion of Pakistani singers. Our film industry is already bogged down by so
many artists who come for employment and then it also has to take the burden
of Pakistani artists, which is not fair to Indians. It’s only a one-way
process because Indian artists can’t go and perform there. Because they
don’t have a platform. Set aside the political difference, both the
countries have cultural similarities but then exchange has to be two way.
