Last night our DBA’s had to bounce the Oracle Database because there were to many idle/orphan connections to the database. We share our Oracle Database with other Applications and I am pretty sure they are the cause of most of the problems, but they are asking me to check into how connections/threads are handled.

I have searched the knowledge base and couldn’t find the right key word combination to bring up any valuable information and the Documentation does not answer all my questions. If anyone knows of a good white paper or article on threads I would appreciate that and/or if you can answer my questions.

Questions:

When the Remedy Server starts should the number of Connections equal the sum of the Admin Thread + Min # of List Servers + Min # of Fast Servers + Any Alert Servers + Any Private Servers? (Are there any other connections not listed in this list?)

If you have a larger number for max than min for fast and list servers, what happens when the server becomes busy and starts adding connections above the Min? Will the connections be released back down to the Min?

Are there any known bugs with the Threads not being released or continuing to increase in counts above the Max?

Thanks for any information.
