Another strategy I've used is to make the Status field read-only, and have 
other actions like buttons change the Status when all the conditions are met, 
and for the correct permission groups.  Using Active Links gives you that 
flexibility and control.  It would not be simple to change Help Desk to that 
functional model, but it could be done.
 
The only way I know that you could only display the next valid value is to use 
another field.  The problem is that what if there was more than one valid new 
state?

Just wondering, is it possible to display in a drop-down menu only the
status another status can change to?
If you have defined 10 status but for example from "new" you can only
change to "assigned", is it possible if the actual status is "new" to
display only the "assigned" status?

Hi,

We have a form called State Transitions that say if it is valid or
invalid for a ticket to move from one status to another. We then have an
active link that runs on our Helpdesk form that checks the validity. We
only allow experts to change a ticket to resolved, but not to closed. We
have escalation that changes a ticket to a status of closed.

Its is one form and one Active link if you would like me to send it to
you.

We are running ARS 6.3, MidTier 6.3, We have a homegrown Helpdesk form,
but we are told it is very similar to Remedy's Helpdesk.
