I wish I'd known that a little while back; I've had to jump through hoops to get this to be done .... had to setup a bunch of new/temporary entries in the status field, move everything over to their temporary ones, then amend the originals accordingly, and then move the entries back over from the temp to the revised entries.
Fun stuff ..... easy enough to do, but you've got to be oh-so-careful.

There is a program in the developer community downloads called archgsel

I believe that Misi also has a similar program (for free as well) on his
website: http://www.rrr.se. It's called rrrSelectionChange and is in the
rrrTools section. I haven't used it, but everything else of Misi's that
I've tried has worked... :)
Good luck!

Subject: Changing Value Order in 'Status' field
Hi List,
I had a request to change the order of the selection list for the 'Status'
field and would like to know what people have done in the past to accomplish
this task successfully. I know that there are probably couple of ways to do
this and I know that there might not be an easy clean way to do it. If you
won't mind sharing the experience I am pretty sure that other would benefit
from this as well.
Thank you.
