I've run through it a couple of times
already and here's what I would suggest.
Do a fresh install, and leave all of the
data you can on the old database, which should be set aside for reporting.
It's ok to move over some of the things like the configuration data in the SHR
forms, but that will require some cleanup. Also Asset will be something
that is a pain but you will want to bring across most likely.
Helpdesk has changed to Problem and
Incident, and the fields have changed enough that you will probably want to just
leave the legacy data alone. Run the two systems in parallel until the old
HD tickets are closed, and have the new ones entered on the new
system.
Change is completely different so you
should cut off the legacy data in a similar manner.
Also for Asset keep in mind that it is very
different between 5.6 and 7.0, but 6.0 to 7.0 is about the same, so any
documentation on upgrading from 5.6 to 6.0 would be helpful for you. I did
that upgrade basically by breaking up the different CTI's into different
spreadsheets and importing them into the different forms. It really
depends on what variety of assets you have if you are going to do it that
way.
Currently I am working on an installation of ITSM 7.0
to replace some home grown apps. So far it looks like implementing ITSM
7.0 is not a lot more difficult than previous implementations. There
is more to configure than there was in earlier versions, but I think a tradeoff
is that it requires less custom workflow. The biggest hurdle I have to
overcome is keeping the CMDB data populated with current data from other
sources. It is a lot harder to keep Asset data in particular up to date
manually in Asset 6.0 and 7.0, so you really need a discovery tool. Right
now there's no plan to purchase Marimba and the other BMC solutions, so we're
going to be stuck building integrations into a lot of other
applications.
