You are correct Doug.  The other thing they should have done was told Remedy
that they were sending it out.

So the proper phrasing for all of this might have been:

The KEY for SLA 6 will not work on ARS 7. The SLA product is being replaced
by SLM, which does run on ARS 7. If you have an SLA 6 KEY you can get a new
SLM KEY at no cost before next summer, or you can purchase SLM after that.

So, a reasonable argument for upgrading to ARS 7 and SLM (modulo your points
about the upgrade tool and sample system for evaluation), and an unfortunate
choice of wording for the sales fellow, eh?

I see nothing in this which would prevent you from obtaining the new KEY
now, but not using it until you had upgraded and evaluated a test
environment as you see fit. It would be in BMC's interest to make sure you
have the tools and time to do that.
