Fred and all, I have another computer with just a single ARS server installed. It's a duplicate in every way of the server I was working on during this post, except that the second computer has only one ARS server installed, and on that computer, archgid works fine. The field Id change was successful.
So, apparently, the problem lies with the fact that archgid 5.1 won't work if you have multiple 5.1.2 ARS servers installed as multiple schemas in a single instance on ora 9i, and each uses the same login to Oracle.
