Shawn,
You are in for a busy week at BMC User World! Glad you can make it :) My answers are based on past RUGs. Since this is the first time it is run by BMC (Houston people) instead of Remedy (California people) our actual results may very. I did attend a mandatory meeting for Vendors who will be there. The point was made frequently that this is a technical conference, not a sales convention....
Birds of a Feature - There is a central place where people can post proposed subjects and other people can add their name to the list as interested. The top # suggestions are each assigned a room and you get together and discuss your topic. BMC/Remedy tries to find an employee or two who are experts in the area your group has decided to discuss to throw in the mix as extra expertise but sometimes the group ends up on their own without a staff employee present. Either way, it is a great time of sharing, generally accompanied with beer and pizza.
Evening with R & D (formerly known as Evening with Engineering) - In years past, everyone would gather in the general session auditorium. BMC/Remedy would station various groups of engineers around the room. There should be representation from AR System, CMDB, Applications, and now probably Marimba, Patrol, Magic (you will not hear them referred to by those names. BMC has renamed all the products) The attendees then visit the group(s) they are interested in asking questions. This is your opportunity to ask the people who built it why they did it the way they did and how you can accomplish the thing that has you stumped. This too is generally accompanied by food and drink. This has been known to go on until 11PM. It is a great opportunity to geek out.
BMC Celebration - It is always a secret until we get there what the Celebration will be but I can tell you it will be a lot of fun, food and drink (2 free drinks, then you have to pay but only for alcohol). To give you a flavor, here is a list of some past celebrations -
*Rented out ESPN Zone and gave everyone free game cards
*Party, with a theme, in a ballroom of the hotel with live band or DJ
-sometimes they would have carnival style games as well
-most times there was silly entertainment mixed in (picture funny wigs, hats, lays, other props)
*Rented out the San Francisco Exploratorium so we could geek out and they had a live band.
Break out sessions - If you sign up before you get there, you get first access to seating. The only let others in after the preassigned have gotten in. Last year, this lead to some people not being able to get in but they reran the most popular sessions later to so more people could attend. You should have gotten an email explaining how to sign up for sessions in advance. Guess you'd better check with whoever signed you up about what email address they gave.
Other hints -
*wear comfortable shoes, you will walk and stand a LOT.
*Go to the Vendor Expo and see what other products are out there and meet the consulting companies that could help you if you need the extra help.
*Plan to attend as much of the event as possible (no planning an afternoon off in San Francisco in the middle of the conference) There is SO much to learn between sessions and talking with your fellow Remedy geeks :)
*Attend the ARSList Awards on Thursday. It is always entertaining and a good chance to put faces to the names of the frequent posters.

**Hello folks,This is going to be the first year I've been able to go to a RUG/BMC Userworld, and I have some questions. I didn't register for myself so I don't know if there is a more complete agenda than what is available on their site. As a result of a lack of information I have a few questions:1) What are these things that are listed on the agenda for the evenings? Birds of a Feather, Evening with R&D, BMC Celebration?2) For the breakout sessions, how do you sign up for them? Is it first come first serve, you sign up when you check in for the conference, or is that something that I have to contact the person who registered me to sign me up for them?3) Are there any other tips, tricks, or information that I should know before going? Anything I should bring along that might not be expected? If anyone can help clue me in I would appreciate it.Thanks,Shawn PiersonThe information in this e-mail, and any files transmitted with it, is intended for the exclusive use of the recipient(s) to which it is addressed and may contain confidential, proprietary or privileged information.
