Some fields have this greyed out. Also, there is a method to allow a user to update their own record, but I think the only field they can change is the Password field. I may have the time to examine this in more detail over the next few days.

In the admin tool preferences, you can set the default permissions to include the 'allow any user to submit' on the fields tab.
