Barb,

We are in the process of investigating the same options. We had a
conference call Friday with our BMC/Remedy Sales rep and other backline
folks.

Below is my interpretation of the call. The phrasing may not be exactly
correct but the overall process/issues descriptions are pretty close.

Version 7.x supports uni-code at the database and server level. The
installation of additional language sets is required for the application
server if it's a SUN server. My understanding is that the Windows OS
supports uni-code so additional language sets are not required for the
application server.

If the server is connecting to an Oracle instance, then the database
needs to be setup with utf-8. Also the oracle client needs to be
configured so that the conversation between the app server and the
database ore the same.

The real issue becomes the clients. The desktop clients do not support
uni-code. It seems that there is a potential for corruption if a record
created with one language and it is modified with a client using a
different language. Some of this could simply be what looks like
corruption as an individual with a desktop client viewing a record in
another language may see odd characters because the client will not
display the language correctly because of the desktop client. This is
not an issue if viewed with Mid-tier which does support uni-code. It
maybe possible to add workflow to minimize risks of corruption with
desktop client. We're still thinking about ramifications of only using
Mid-tier or adding workflow that incorporates Locale and Client-Type
keyword.

I also found a white paper on the Support web site called BMC(r)
Remedy(r) Action Request System(r) 7.0 and Unicode that was published in
July. I found the white paper shortly before our conference call and
have not had a chance to read it yet.

My suggestion is to work with your sales rep to get a better
understanding of the potential issues early in the process.
