Rebecca,
Running different versions of Oracle under the same user id
will be problematic at best. The ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_BASE, ORA_NLS33 variables
point to Oracle version specific paths. The path for 9.2.0.x is different than
the path for 10g.
I have run two versions of Oracle on the same server and
have found it troublesome to maintain. It is easier (but
not necessarily easy) to have different Oracle installs under different ID's.
One problem we have found relates to Opatch. There are some files that
need to be changed to point to the path of the Oracle version being patched. I
don't recall all the file names, but /etc/oraInst.loc is server
specific and contain the path to the Oracle inventory.

You had better not be running Oracle as root.
I run one instance of Oracle as oracle. I don't know
if you can run both as the same user or not.

(for the list) is this – how can I set up my environment variables so that the
same User (non-root) can run Oracle 9i and 10g, perhaps at the same time?
Or…I can’t? From: Action

Hi
all, So, I know
that I can install ARS 6.3 and 7.0 on the same App. Server, but today, when I
called Support about an installation question, they implied that although I can
install the ARServers, I might not be able to install ITSM 7.0 on my ARS 7.0
instance (since I have ITSM 6.0 on my ARS 6.3 instance).
Does anyone
know if this is true? Has anyone installed 6.3/7.0 on the same box, with
the appropriate ITSM versions on the servers? Thanks! -Rebecca
