Create a hidden field for the calculation and then a set fields that will populate the visible field after the calculation is completed.

I have a seeming minor problem that is stumping me. I created a form that contains many integer fields. I need to display the sum of all of the integer fields is a separate field on the same form. To accomplish this I created an active link with a set field action with a simple equation ($field1$+$field2$+$field3$, etc) to add the total. I am running into two problems: 1) when the form is submitted, the "total" field momentarily displays the WRONG number; 2) after the form is saved and you open it in search mode, the "total" field is empty.
So I basically need help creating an equation that works and have the form actually save the data in the "total" field. Or is there a better way to do this?
In case you haven't already guessed I have only been using Remedy for a few months.
Thanks in advance!
Jimmy
