Sara,
The only way I have done this in the past is
to fist create the new field. Run an
escalation to populate the data from
the existing field you want to change
to the new field. Once completed, delete
the old field.
You need to ensure that the data you are putting in the
few field is valid of that field.
There
may be other methods but this worked for me.
