Keep in mind that if you create a new field, you will lose any workflow or reports that used the original field.

To maintain reports and workflow, you will want to keep the same field ID.  For this you could create a temporary field of the correct type, port the data to that temp field.  Then create a new orignal field like this:
>copy the field ID of the orignal field
> delete it and save the form
> create a new field of the correct type and paste the field ID in the Data tab.
Then, port the data back from the temp field to the new original field. Then delete the temp field.  That should keep you workflow and reports working.

Sara,

The only way I have done this in the past is to fist create the new field. Run an escalation to populate the data from the  existing field you want to change to the new field. Once completed, delete the old field.

You need to ensure that the data you are putting in the few field is valid of that field.

There may be other methods but this worked for me.

Subject: Question?

Hello List,

Is there anyway that I don't know to convert an existing field type to another field type, eg. character field to numeric field?  I just want to check with you before I tell the user it is impossible.

Thanks,
