The "Type Ahead" feature may also be a workaround for certain situations where the user requires to type a part of the value which will pop a list of similar values.. For most use cases this works as the user knows more or less what the value is supposed to look like..

What I have done before is to use my own button to do a search (when the menu data is in a form). Our Tier 0 folks don't want to switch and have listed the inability of multi-level menus to expand when opened. In the docs this is not a feature that works in the browser.
