Yes, your correct. After version 6 this is not possible.

the name is stored.  Altering the data in those tables will invalidate
the workflow/checksum and put your workflow in a broken state.  Think

You will need to go through the api to rename the objects; choose your method:
- export a def, modify the names in the def, delete the objects from
the server, then import
- write an api (perl/c/java) to update the workflow
