Something else you might consider is creating notification groups for the
supervisors, so that you could segregate the messages sent to the group
members and their managers.

What I ideally would want to do is for certain people who are only
technicians (who are not supervisors for the groups) would be to change
their Group Notification To No for the Incident Assignment Notification.
 
If I created an entry for Incident Assignement for the person and specified
No for Group Notification, would that override the System default
notification for Incident Assignment Notification?

If the Supervisor gets the notifications all of the people in the group get
them. the new notifications are held in the SYS:Notifications form you might
be able to create new entries to be able to have this work the way you want
by reviewing all of the new notification workflow and adding some new
workflow.

Ive been working on building out on our test instance of ITSM 7.X to more or
less simulate how we would envision our upgrade to go with production.
I was trying to see if I could change the notification preference for a
person profile so that the person will only get Incident Assignment
notifications if they were assigned as an individual but not if the
assignment went to their group.
We have some groups from our broadcast areas that have supervisors that
handle taking the tickets in their group and assigning then to the
technicians.
They do not want the technicians to get the notification when the ticket is
assigned only to their group to prevent them from picking up the ticket
themselves.
It seems that however in Notification preferences I cant modify "System
Default" types at all. 
Does anyone know of a simple back door way to update them?
