Dan, You will need to check all user entry points (such as web services, display only forms, incident or problem table where the solution description field is set, etc) for solutions for a field that the Description is pushed to or is set from the solution database, and make sure all of these have the same length. Else after increasing the field you would risk getting 'value too large' errors..
I remember having your exact same problem with one of my customers, and I did exactly what I've suggested with no negative consequences.
