We are on Solaris and running the 7.0.1 patch 1 email engine. We got hit one time with a couple of hundred email alerts in a 15 minuet window and had a small delay, but no real issues.
I would say you need to look at how your java is set up, maybe turn on the java logging to see what is going on.
