In short, though, it is possible to accomplish what you are trying to do. My guess would be that most ARS installations out there are split. ARS should not care where the database is as long as it can communicate with it.
Do some simple tests before starting the database such as making sure you can connect to the remote database from the ARS server? Turn on SQL logging when you start ARS and see what it says.
