Or simply add dummy values (and a filter to dissuade users from selecting them) and revert to the old style numbering. The search menu in a different field can be used in a filter to convert to the selection value as well.

If so, then there is no workaround. 5.0 simply can't understand this and I am not sure what the 5.0 ape will do with field types (or attributes) defined in future releases except to ignore those types of fields (such as this type of enum or currency fields). I would expect that if your enum is of the old type (0,1,2...) that the 5.0 WUT should continue to work.
