Or simply add dummy values (and a filter to dissuade users from selecting them) and revert to the old style numbering. The search menu in a different field can be used in a filter to convert to the selection value as well.

I would expect that if your enum is of the old type (0,1,2...) that the 5.0 WUT should continue to work.
