As I recall, 1300 people attended the rug after the dot com bust. The market
wasn't any worse then than now. Did any BMC customer or partner get asked
whether they would attend?

There is also another side to this as well.

How many companies in the current financial climate can or are willing
to send some or all of their Remedy teams to such a conference? If I
was a manager trying to keep costs down, I might have a difficult time
justifying plane tickets, hotel fees, car rental, and other travel
expenses for such a conference. BMC could have some very justified
fears that attendance would be too low to be worth the effort, and that
a number of third-party vendors may also keep their staff away in
efforts to save costs.

Roger, on the surface that makes sense. But you can bet they haven't
stopped spending money on sales and marketing. And RUG is certainly
that. It is the one event they put on that stirs the pot, so to speak.
They must think there is no money to be made right now.

I am sure no one can be surprised at this. They just laid-off 350
employees. My guess would be they don't have much in the way of
discretionary money. It is really too bad but that is they way of the
world these days.

I have an issue with attending any conference that is hosted by one of
the third party vendors. Too easy to become unbalanced and geared
toward messages from that particular vendor.

Just my opinion.

ColumnIT has done events similar to RUGs, only to a smaller, more local
group. Keynote address, guest speakers, tutorial sessions and customer
presentations every year in Atlantic City for the past few years. Maybe
they would pick this up??

How much can it possibly cost to put on one of these? Isn't the entry
fees of the people enough to cover the costs?

I think that if someone on the list was motivated enough, they might
could even make some money by putting it on. If you have it somewhere,
like here in OKC, it would be a lot cheaper, and in the middle of the
US, so it would be easier for everyone to attend.

What is usually the admission fees at the RUGs in the past, I've never
been to one?

If you charge an admission fee to the people, then a booth fee for the
presentations, those fees should pay for themselves, and shouldn't have
to be too much.

Thanks,

Gary Opela, Jr.

**

Daniel,

We submitted a proposal for presentation at the 2009 UserWorld on
Knowledge Management Best Practices. We want to be part of an event to
share this and would be willing to travel or participate in a virtual
conference.

I suggest a LinkedIn group.

Apparently not only did they botch up the 2008,

They have decided to follow that up with just not trying for 2009

(they don't say it won't happen, just they will not host it which is not

Necessarily the same thing, but this year probably is).

Guess that makes the ARSlist the UserWorld 2009, meeting from now to the
end of the year,

At least for the BMC BSM/Atrium/Remedy crowd.

I will let others discuss if this is a good fiscal move or not. I think
the value

Of the conference outweighs the costs, but I only have to pay the bill
for me.

In any event, or lack thereof, this means I will be doing the following:

1) Returning to the Vote for the ARSlist Awards for 2008

2) Planning for some set of events that can allow us to properly

Do the ARSlist Awards 2009 and provide a method for us all to

Share our discoveries of 2009. This may mean a multi-city simultaneous
conference,

Or setting up a virtual conference.

3) Exploring other on-line avenues to expand what the
ARSlist/WWRUG can provide

To replace our annual conference networking ability. The first is a
FaceBook Group

But if folks have other thoughts please let me know

....... Daniel
