We are also a pure custom shop and we upgraded the server from 5.x to 6.3 to 7.1.
The 5 to 6.3 updated license format (You send your license files to Remedy through the Support Web and they send you back a file with both the 5 and 6.3 formats in it). This also went through the users and changed the way the passwords were encrypted. The version 6.3 to 7.1 upgrade changed all the standard fields that hold a login (Submitter, Last Modified By, Login Name) to be 254 characters, and moved the license info from the license file into the database.
