I learnt the hard way that the 10gR1 client is no good for 7.5 (at least on windows) as it appears that it doesn't find some files that may be required, as the installer for 7.5 complains of permissions to the Oracle client libraries - we were installing at Admins so it could only mean those libraries were missing altogether and get installed with 10gR2.
