That is correct. Your best option is simply to handle the scenario where they close it with the red X. The easiest way to do that is to have all valid actions that would close the window assign a value to a field that you have assigned to the output mapping in the open window action. You can then test for a NULL value in that field to see if they've closed the window using the X. You can then take whatever action you deem appropriate to recover from that.
