We recently moved RKM to its own server due to performance issues and issues dealing with shared files in Tomcat when we would apply patches or upgrades. It is definitely feasible to have RKM and the Mid Tier on the same server, and we ran with that for quite a while, but it's easier to support RKM onto its own server.
