Notepad++ also has a neat FTP plugin that allows you to access files on a unix
box with an 'explorer type tree view' of the folders on the ftp site.
Only downside is that you have to double-click on the file in the
ftp-snap-in-window each time you want to see if the file has changed in the
meanwhile...

Theo

Oh, yes - the ability to register a site's ftp login and edit files directly
without the extra down/up load steps is also a pleasure, particularly for doing
quick website work.

** UltraEdit can, I believe. I know it can use (s)ftp to transfer files and I
know it can monitor the files that it has open to see if they change. I
honestly have to say I don't recall trying to monitor a unix file through ftp
but I am fairly confident that it can.

Thanks Theo.

I was thinking it was an xml file created by Remedy? I missed your earlier
post.

Thanks again!

I'm somewhat new to Remedy and I've been introduced to Notepad++; great tool.
I'm curious about the xml file discussed below (userDefineLang.xml file); where
do I find this file?

Trying out Notepad++, thanks Theo.

Note that rather than changing your APPDATA setting, you can instead go to
"View -> User Defined Dialogue..." Use 'Create New' to create a Remedy entry,
then import your .xml file. Setting the Language to your Remedy entry then
provides the highlighting you created.

I use either baretail or Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/) for most log
files and have created a Notepad++ user defined language descriptor for some
Remedy related files a couple of years ago.
This colour-codes the files for easy reading.
The following files are included:
Remedy .Def
Remedy .Cfg
Remedy .Log
Remedy .Arr
Remedy .Arq
Remedy .Arm

Notepad++ can also auto-detect file changes and prompts you to reload the file
once you bring it into focus.
You can also force it to reload an open file with two mouse clicks.
Old log entries can also be removed without having to switch off the logging in
Remedy. (This way you keep the log file small & manageable whilst debugging a
process.)

To configure Notepad++ to use this:
1. Add the userDefineLang.xml file to the Notepad++ install dir
2. Disable the use APPDATA setting
3. Restart Notepad++

HTH...

Best Regards,
Theo

** I use UltraEdit. You can create a language file for AR log files if you
wished. As well as it has some great macro functionality. I have macros that
remove an entries that didn't perform work which makes the log file MUCH easier
to use. It also allows javascripts also, but I haven't done much with that.

There is also a tool out there called Jedit and it is written in java and might
allow interface with the Remedy API which would allow some really impressive
stuff to be done with a log file. But I haven't really played with that one
either.
