The sun is just a little speck compared to the size of VY Canis Majoris which is estimated to be 1800 to 2100 solar radii (1 solar radius is the radius of the sun – obviously and hence the term solar radius). Here are some facts about the sizes of these stars..
 
This is the list of largest known stars..
 
And some comparisons with some of our planets including the earth with the size of the sun and the size of the 15th largest star.
 
Can you imagine if we lived on a planet as big as the VY Canis Majoris? Technically it would have not been possible even if it did have an atmosphere and water and everything else conducive to existence of life..
