I have noticed this recently with Mid Tier 7.6.04 SP3. I don't know the root cause but as a work around you can login to the MT config page: on the General Settings page set the authentication server to "-- Select a Authentication Server" (or if it is not set this is the root cause), save, set it back to you AR server and save.
This should work for a while but you will want to check that it is still working every now and again. I am not sure what triggers it to stop working but I have had it stop working after a while until I jiggled the setting again.
