If you're seeing this:

Then I'm afraid it is a product defect. NPEs are runtime exceptions, ie
they happen and shouldn't. That's why Java devs put in an if statement.
Tomcat returns a status code 500 because the application has 'crashed'
processing the request, ie it didn't handle the error properly.
