So if I rent a Hertz car is parking at the hotel is free? OR do I have to
still pay for it on top of the Hertz Rental costs?

Yes, they do. It is underneath the hotel, in the parking garage.

I believe Hertz has an office, limited hours, at the hotel itself, in case
that is of use to anyone.

Natalie,

I should have included Oakland….

OK, Oakland, you have several choices:

One is to rent a car, drive to San Jose, return the car to the airport or
somewhere else close by and take a

taxi from there. Then reverse on the return. (the option you describe)
And you can get a really low end

car as you only need it for a 35 to 40 mile drive.

Two is to take a taxi. No 1 ½ times the fare, but it is a LONG way
(surprisingly enough, 35 to 40 miles).

Three is to take one of the "airporter" type shuttles. Cheaper than a taxi.
BUT it is per person and you

probably would end up with more than a taxi would cost.

Four is to take public transit. A simple matter of getting from the airport
to BART. Since that doesn't connect

to San Jose, you would take BART over the bay to San Francisco and then
south to the Milbrae stop. There

you would get off and transfer to CalTrain and ride that down to probably
the Mt. View stop. There, you

would get off and transfer to San Jose light rail. After one or two
transfers on light rail, you end up in the

general vicinity of the hotel. So, 4 people with probably $15 in tickets
each, taking say 3 hours or maybe 4 if

things don't connect well, and the cost of heavy drinking to be able to
survive all the changes and transfers,

plus the cost of a taxi at the end when you miss your stop (see the heavy
drinking that came previously) and

you could probably get there for say $100 or so each….. HEY, this is
California. Don't expect well organized

public transit!

I'm sure others can suggest other options – hitchhiking is generally not
that successful, but it is an option.

(personally, I think your plan sounds REALLY good).

Say Doug, do you happen to know about the options for folks who are flying
into Oakland? For us, that was significantly cheaper.

Because there are 4 of us coming, we’re renting a car at the Oakland
airport, then dropping it off at a rental car place not far from the hotel
after we arrive Monday, thus saving ourselves the $26/day parking fee at the
hotel, and we’ll reverse that process when we go home. We figure there’s at
least a chance we’ll even get the same car back.

But I ask in case there are others who decided to fly into Oakland and for
whom the rental car option doesn’t make sense. I did see that the VTA
(bus/light rail) system had an option that looked like it would drop you off
less than .5 mile away from the hotel (and for a mere $11), but it looked
like that would take 2-3 hours, and I don’t know how late those shuttles run
or how safe they are. Then when you think about making the return trip on
Friday and having to get to the airport 1.5 – 2 hours early – that’s not so
attractive an option.

Thanks,

Lisa,

Taxis are available at the airport without prior arrangement. Just follow
the signs out to the taxi stand and

there are usually ones sitting there or if not, they are on call from a taxi
waiting area out near the long term

parking area so they come within a couple of minutes (true of both
airports).

Now, if you are coming into San Jose, you are talking a short taxi ride to
the WWRUG hotel (or area if you are

in another hotel close by). I would expect no more than around $20 to $25.

If you are coming into San Francisco, you are a long way away from the
event. AND, you have a challenge of

how they charge for taxis. If you go more than about 10 miles from San
Francisco airport, they charge 1 ½

times the meter (it is a standard rule). I know the charge to get about ½
way is around $90. So, San Francisco

to the WWRUG hotel in a taxi will be a VERY expensive trip – probably $150
or more, and 40 minutes if off

hours to 1 hour or more if the wrong time of day.

So, if coming into San Francisco, you may want to take a look at how you are
getting from the airport to

the hotel. There are car sharing services/shuttles that are available.
Less convenient but cheaper. I don't

know the charge they would have. They can be arranged in advance or picked
up there.

OR, you could look at prearranging a car service/taxi for a fixed rate (and
there are a number of "limo services"

that make airport runs) that may keep the cost more to the probably $100
range.

Anyway, enough travel logistics… Come into San Jose airport and it is easy.
Come into San Francisco and a bit

more of a hassle.

Back to those darn active links and why they don't fire when I think kind
thoughts about puppies (the next

firing condition I expect to be requested).

Are there usually taxis stationed at the airport for on-demand service, or
should I pre-arrange one? Getting in rather late on Monday (9:00pm) and
would like to take a taxi to the hotel.

Thanks!
