I have run ITSM 8.x in a VM (VMware Workstation) on a laptop with 8gb and 4
CPU. I was able to give the VM about 5.5gb for ram. Like Carl said it was
sluggish but once ARS got up and running/MT is cached it was suitable for
trying things out in ITSM. I would set SQL Server to 1gb usually if I was
doing something db intensive I might bump it up to 1.5gb.

My new standard for VMware Workstation is 16gb on host and that allows me
to give the VM 8gb with plenty left for working outside of the VM. The
ITSM VM works pretty well with 8gb of ram.
