I uninstalled both Java and Artemis, then reinstalled. This got rid of problem 1 (i.e. that for some reason the .jar file associated with WinZip), but not of problem 2, even when associated with javaw, double-clicking on the jar reported "Error could not find thread 'main'".
This was with j2re_1_3_1. In desperation, I downloaded the latest: j2re_1_4_2, for a while things did not work, then I unassociated the file from javaw, and reassociated it, and this time, hey presto, it worked... Saddly I have no idea which particular bit on tinkering solved the problem, seems like it's just one of these problems which spontaneously disappears after some messing about! Nevertheless, thanks to all of you for your prompt suggestions.
