For future reference - the reason was unreliably mounting a slow Samba share
on the linux machine running Artifactory and using it for storage. This was
highly fragile due to no support for atomic file-system operations and
possibly connectivity reliability issues. Moving the storage to a new ext3
drive was part of the solution.
FYI, Artifactory has full support for both database (multiple types) or
file-system based storage:
