Hi nodje,
It might help to think of the remote artifact retrieval as a multistep
process; when requesting a remote artifact which isn't cached yet, this is
more or less what happens:
1. User requests an artifact from Artifactory (GET - a "*retrieval*"
request).
2. Artifactory queries the local cache and receives no result.
3. The artifact is requested from the remote repository.
4. If found, the artifact is then *deployed* to the local cache.
5. The content of the artifact is sent to the user as a response to the
GET request in step 1 (hence, the *retrieval*).
The local cache is a form of a local repository, only that it acts as
storage for the designated remote repository; nonetheless, it is a local
repository and artifacts are being deployed to it (although it's not direct
deployment).
