Hi,
You should distinguish between local repositories and remote ones, On local
repository the index is indexing only deployed artifacts but because you
haven't deployed anything yet the index on those repositories is empty.
When indexing Remote repositories, Artifactory only download the index
files from the remote, it is possible that on some of them it fails, you
can look for that in the log. For testing purpose before going to eclipse
run this request '
http://localhost:8081/artifactory/repo/.index/nexus-maven-repository-index.gz'
so you'll have the aggregated index Artifactory generated. This is the file
eclipse is downloading. If everything looks good, install the m2eclips
plugin on your eclipse and you should be good to go. If you still have
trouble look in the Admin->advanced->System Logs->access.log or request.log
and see if the download of the file by eclipse was done successfully.
Tree browsing only shows cached artifacts, either deployed by you to one of
the local repositories or downloaded and cached on the remote ones.
In the simple browser you have an option to browse the repository remotely,
you will see a globus icon on artifacts that are not yet cached locally.
When you do a search, Artifactory only searches on cached artifacts, so
this is why you come up empty when searching for 'spring'.

Eli
