No, I don't have any good ideas, here. There are two possibilities:
1. There is some set of settings which you have not tried yet, and which
will make it work (unlikely, but possible).
2. Somehow, the aRts code doesn't work right in your setup, then the only
way for getting it fixed is to methodically debug it until you know
exactly what goes wrong where and why. Then you'll need to find a change to
the code which does work - the problem might either be in the the FreeBSD
audio driver you're using (or generally in all FreeBSD audio code), or in
the artsd code. It might be hardware dependant or it might affect all
FreeBSD users in the same way.
